What is Gall Bladder diet?
![]() |
Gall bladder- the pear-shaped sac located under the liver- is the place where the bile produced by the liver is stored. The bile which is produced in the liver is released when food containing fat enters the digestive tract, stimulating the secretion of cholecystokinin (CCK). The bile emulsifies fats and neutralizes acids in partly digested food. After being stored in the gallbladder the bile becomes more concentrated than when it left the liver, increasing its potency and intensifying its effect on fats. Most digestion occurs in the duodenum.
If there was no bile or if it was present in less than the required amount, food digestion would be impaired and we would suffer from a host of troubles like nausea, vomiting, heart-burn, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. And when the bile in your body contains too much cholesterol or bilirubin, this may cause gallstones.
Here comes the function of gall bladder diet, which aims to reducing the risk of the development of gallstones. The gall bladder diet includes lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, cereals and plenty of water.
So when you follow a gall bladder diet, in addition to all the general ingredients of the diet, you should also include the intake of fiber because the more fiber you consume, the more water you are going to drink thus avoiding problems like constipation. You should avoid chocolate, ice cream, eggs, red meat, milk, coffee, nuts, beans, pork, onion, chicken, milk, oranges, grapefruit, corn, hydrogenated oils, saturated fats, fried foods and margarine.
You should also avoid refined, fatty and fried foods containing saturated fats, trans fats, hydrogenated fats and partially-hydrogenated fats.
So in order to follow a gall bladder diet, the first step is to consult your doctor or a nutritionist and then design the gall bladder diet specifically suited for you.
