Water Chestnut, your healthy friend

Chestnuts are not nuts, but they are called so, they don’t even grow on trees. They are actually tubers which grow wild in marsh lands or in shallow waters along the lake banks. They have a dark brown skin and an ivory flesh, a crisp texture and a slightly sweet, nutty flavor.
Walnut chestnuts are not very uncommon. They can prove to be a good food, especially if the person who is consuming those is observing a fast.
Water chestnuts are known to be as good storehouses of carbohydrates, which makes it a very good replacement for grains. Chapattis can be made with the flour prepared with the dried chestnuts. The flour is prepared by grounding dried chestnuts.
Chestnuts also have certain characteristics, which make them popular enough in tropical countries since they have a lot of properties which are curative and also supplementing. Curative in ways that it helps relieve cough if the water chestnut powder is mixed with water. A sweet soup of chestnuts can prove very beneficial in cases where the person finds it painful to urinate. The juice of chestnuts also relieves problems like nausea and those of indigestion. Water chestnuts are also discovered to have cured jaundice and enjoy properties which are detoxifying. They have a cooling nature which soothes best in heat, and so are they very popular in tropical countries.
Generally consumed raw, water chestnuts can also be sautéed or steamed. They can serve to be as a handy and a great snack for evening.
But water chestnuts are also avoided by most of the people because they are not high in protective antioxidants; the level of protective antioxidants is low. Sodium concentration is high in water chestnuts which are canned; this is because salt is added in the process of canning. The water chestnuts are also very cold and they are laxative in nature and therefore they should not be eaten blindly, they should be eaten in proper quantities r they would cause gas issues or bloating. Water chestnuts are not recommended for pregnant women.
It is also a staple in Chinese cuisine.
They are nit at all a nut, even though the name is so; instead they are a low- calorie vegetable. They are also taste enhancers and also appetizers; they are used widely in salads. They are great sources of vitaminB and fiber. They also hold good amounts of calcium, iron, potassium and zinc.
