Vitamin D - Know more about Vitamins
![]() |
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is present naturally in very few food products, added to others, and available as dietary supplements. This vitamin is also produced endogenously when UV rays from the sun strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. This vitamin has the ability of promoting absorption of calcium in the gut besides maintaining adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal mineralization of bone and to prevent hypocalcemic tetany.
The vitamin is also required by the human body for bone growth and bone remodeling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. In the absence of vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen. In addition to all these benefits, vitamin D also plays an important role in modulation of cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, and reduction of inflammation.
The flesh of fatty fishes such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel and fish liver oils are among the best sources of vitamin D. In addition to then, vitamin D is found in plenty in oysters, margarine, fortified cereals, and dairy products like cheese, butter, cream, and fortified milk.
