Prednisone is in a class of drugs called steroids that prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. It is used to treat many different conditions such as allergic disorders, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, or breathing disorders.
Let us now see the important points that have to taken care of while opting for prednisone as a medicine. Any person allergic to prednisone should not opt for this. If you have a fungal infection anywhere in your body, then stay away from this
medicine. Before opting for prednisone, just inform the doctor about your medical conditions, and the medicines that you are using. There are many other diseases that can be affected by steroid use, and many other medicines that can interact with steroids. The steroid medication needs may change if you are suffering from any unusual stress like a serious illness, fever or infection. Inform the doctor about any such situation that affects you during treatment.
Steroid medication can weaken the immune system, making it easier for to get infected if you already have or have recently had. Just clear it up with the doctor if you suffer from any illness or infection you have had within the past several weeks.
Stay away from people who are sick or have infections. Call the doctor for preventive treatment if exposed to chicken pox or measles. These conditions can be serious or even fatal in those who are using steroid medication. Do not receive a “live” vaccine while taking prednisone as it may not work. Never stop the intake of prednisone suddenly as it may cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Just talk to the doctor about how to avoid withdrawal symptoms when stopping the medication. Carry an ID card or wear a medical alert bracelet stating that you are taking a steroid, in case of emergency.
