INJURIES AND WOUNDS

INJURIES AND WOUNDSDamage inflicted on the body as the direct or indirect result of an external force, with or without disruption of structural continuity is said to be an injury or wound. In other words it is the damage or harm caused to the structure or function of the body caused by an outside agent or force, which may be physical or chemical.

Injuries can be minor like a nick or major like bullet shot wounds, which may prove to be fatal. Burns, fractures, wounds, bites, toxic inhalation etc. are all common examples of injury.

Sprains and injuries are a normal part of life. If neglected might lead to infections and wounds may become septic. Hence, they should be treated immediately

 HOME REMEDIES FOR SPRAINS

• Massage the area of sprain with mustard oil and then sprinkle some turmeric powder on it.
• Put 1 tablespoon of black coffee in a bandage and bandage the foot sprain.

Sprains usually occur because of excessive stretching or tearing of a ligament, which is one of those tough bands of elastic-like tissue attached to a joint.

Skin wounds or injuries, like cuts, abrasions, and punctures, are often marked by bleeding, swelling, pain, and if infected, by pus formation. Bacteria and foreign elements that penetrate the skin through the skin tear can cause infections and hamper the body’s capability to heal the wound.

REMEDIES FOR WOUNDS

A powerful natural antifungal and antibacterial remedy, grapefruit-seed extract can be used to reduce pain and promote the healing of skin wounds.

Application of old coconut oil (not fresh oil) heals wounds and burns quickly.

Ground or chewed and then applied to a wound, dandelion and chickweed leaves have been known to heal skin cuts and punctures.

Camphor (‘Kapur’ in Hindi) is powdered, pasted in ghee and applied over the affected area to relieve pain and inflammation.

Famous for its disinfecting properties, tree-tea oil applied three times day can help kill germs, dissolve pus, and heal skin wounds.

A most popular remedy to arrest bleeding in fresh wounds is to plug the site with some turmeric (haldi) powder. Quick lime can also be added to turmeric to hasten the effect.

Paste the leaves of Bael (Bel) leaves without adding water. Apply this on pus-oozing wounds to get relief.

Boil aloe leaves and take the fleshy part of the inside of the leaves to use as a poultice over wounds.

However before following any of the remedies you should consult your physician. And it mandatory to consult your doctor if the wounds are major, near joints or the groin, contains a foreign object, or is not healing promptly.

Types of Rotator Cuff Injuries

InjuriesA rotator cuff injury is mainly caused due to an overworked shoulder because of some heavy physical activity like swimming, tennis, cricket etc. This is mainly caused if you do these activities after a long time. There are three kinds of rotator cuff injuries:

Tendonitis: The normal and smooth gliding motion of your tendon may get weakened due to overuse of your tendon. As a result, the action of pulling the muscle becomes irritating.

Age-related changes of the tendon are diagnosed as one of the common causes of tendonitis. Individual suffering from tendonitis usually experience moderate to severe pain in the shoulder area and some limited range of motion.

Tears: Tears in the tendon occur when your tendons actually separate from your bone. These tears cause intense pain and result in immediate loss of mobility, no matter whether they are partial or complete.

Instability Impingement: It occurs when the rotator cuff tendons are weakened and worn out by repetitive activity.

Treatment of Severe Rotator Cuff Injury

Treatment of Severe Rotator Cuff InjuryRotator cuff tears do not heal well with time. They tend to either enlarge, or, at best, stabilize in size. In case of a severe rotator cuff injury, it may require a surgery. Depending on the size, location and type of your injury, common surgical options for repairing the rotator cuff include: Open, Mini-Open, and Arthroscopic.
Open Repair:
Open repair surgery is the most invasive treatment used for a complete muscle and tendon tear. In this surgery, the surgeon repairs the rotator cuff by looking directly at the torn tendon through an incision about 6-10 centimeters in length. It is one of the most preferred methods by surgeons to treat severe rotator cuff injuries because the rotator cuff tendons are easily seen by this method. However, the recovery can be longer and more painful.

Arthroscopic Surgery: This treatment requires only a small incision. Tiny instruments are inserted to repair the tendon. In this surgery, the surgeon looks at the tendon through a small camera to watch the repair on a television monitor. This is a more recent development in treatment of rotator cuff injuries. However, this method can be used to treat all types of tears.

Mini-Open Surgery: This surgery involves the use of an arthroscopy and a short incision to repair a rotator cuff tear. The surgeon uses arthroscopy to look into the shoulder joint in order to clean out any damaged tissue or bone spurs. The opening, which is about 3-4 cm, gets access to the tendon.

Mini-open surgery takes more time to recover as compared to open cuff repair. This surgery is a combination of open and arthroscopic surgery.

Rotator Cuff Injuries

InjuriesDo you feel some sort of a “twinge” in your shoulders? Have you been swimming or doing any sort of rigorous physical activity after a long time? These “twinges” are a sign of a possible rotator cuff injury. It’s caused because of an overworked shoulder.
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles connecting tendons that attach your upper arm to your shoulder blade. At the top of the shoulder, there are muscles called as supraspenatus and there is subscapalaris present in the front of the shoulder.

Infraspinatus and teres minn are present at the back of the shoulder. All these muscles together form the rotator cuff.
This group of muscles helps lift the shoulder up toward the head and away from the body. As we grow older, we tend to loose the elasticity in our muscles. Tendons also become vulnerable to shoulder injuries.
