Hearing loss is a serious health issue that affects a big population around the world. It is the sudden or gradual decrease in the hearing ability. Depending on the cause, it can range from mild to severe and can be reversible, temporary, or permanent. Hearing loss, also known as hearing impairment, includes being born without hearing. But here we talk about the gradual hearing loss. Gradual hearing loss affects people of all ages. It is a big health issue that affects older Americans. Up to 40% of people of age 65 and older and up to 80% of people older than 85 is suffering form hearing disorder. It is very hard to identify gradual hearing disorder. In the beginning you may have difficulty understanding what people are saying, especially when many people are talking at the same time or there is background noise, such as a radio playing.
Hearing loss can affect the personal safety, as it may result in less social interaction, contributing to loneliness, depression, and loss of independence.
The Causes for Hearing Loss
Noise: Noise-induced hearing loss affect people of all ages. The heavy noise at work place or even during common chores can cause hearing loss.
Age: Age is another factor for hearing loss. The age-related hearing loss, also known as presbycusis, may be mild or severe, but it is always permanent.
Built up of ear wax, injury to the ear or head, ear infection, and ruptured eardrum causes hearing disorder.
What are the symptoms?
The common symptoms of hearing loss include muffled hearing. The patient will have a feeling that the ear is plugged. Difficulty in understanding what people are saying is another symptom of this disease. Among other symptoms, ringing, roaring, hissing, or buzzing in the ear also are common. You also may suffer from ear pain, itching, or irritation, or fluid leaking from the ear.
