The truth about energy drinks

The truth about energy drinksMany energy drinks claim to increase your stamina, alertness, give you the “kick” for high intensity workouts. Many people are turning towards these energy drinks to “boost” their energy levels. As a result, there are more than 200 different brands of energy drinks on sale in US.

It was found out that 8 oz of a brand of energy drink contains 77 mg of caffeine while another brand contains 70 mg in 8.3 oz of the drink. This amount of caffeine is similar to a cup of brewed coffee, which has around 85 mg of caffeine.

Since the level of caffeine is similar to a cup of coffee, drinking energy drinks is occasionally is not harmful and is probably safe for most of the adults. Since excess of anything is harmful, excess consumption of energy drinks is also harmful.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends limiting the amount of caffeine in a 12 oz soda to 65 mg. However, the energy drinks are not regulated and many exceed that threshold by a wide margin.

Many people have the bad habit of mixing energy drinks with alcohol. They think that extra caffeine reduces the effects of alcohol. But the truth is something else. No matter whether you add or not add the energy drink to your alcohol, the blood alcohol level will remain the same. Energy drink is a stimulant while alcohol is a depressant which results to dehydration. Hence, mixing energy drink and alcohol is strictly discouraged.

If energy drinks are added to your diet which is already loaded with caffeine, you may encounter some health problems. If you have high blood pressure or are hypersensitive to caffeine, you should limit the consumption of energy drinks.

Coffee allergy- causes and symptoms

Coffee allergy- causes and symptomsSipping a hot and lip-smacking cup of coffee in the morning rejuvenates many of us. But, there many people who are quiet fanatical about the beverage. This is because they may be intolerant to coffee. A cup of coffee can make them wheezing, vomiting and even coughing! Yes, they have coffee allergy.
If at you are allergic to coffee, your immune system will overreact to the proteins found in the coffee. The immune system produces antibodies that are designed to fight off the harmful coffee proteins.

This may usually happen after a few minutes or few hours after drinking coffee. Most mild to moderate reactions last less than a day and can involve a rash on the skin, cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, runny nose, watery eyes, wheezing and coughing.

Caffeine is a drug that is found in all coffees even in decaf. Too much caffeine can cause jitters, headache, insomnia, and irritability. Some coffees have very high concentrations of caffeine. The reaction might happen because of the higher level of caffeine in the coffee.

Coffee contains .3 grams of protein per eight ounce cup. An allergy to the protein in coffee is probably the least likely to happen but it is possible.

So if you have any of the above symptoms of coffee allergy, consult a doctor.

Coffee and Type 2 Diabetes

Coffee and Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a life-long disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood.  According to a survey, 20 million Americans suffer from Diabetes.

You may now ask the question why I am relating coffee with Type 2 Diabetes. This is because coffee may lower your risk for Type 2 Diabetes.

The proof is the latest research done by University of Minnesota School of Public Health. According to the research, drinking coffee can reduce the risk of Diabetes apart from the positive things done by a healthy diet, weight control and exercises.

As per the research, the minerals and antioxidants contained in coffee aid in carbohydrate metabolism and insulin sensitivity and possibly delay the onset of Type 2 Diabetes.

Meanwhile, a research scientist in the Harvard School of Public Health thinks that one of the antioxidants in coffee beans, chlorogenic acid, seems to be able to slow the absorption of sugar by cells. The study conducted in rats found that the molecule lowered blood-sugar levels.

However, the research found that higher coffee intake also contributes to lower body mass index and rates of hypertension.

So, every time you sip your cup of coffee, remember that excess of it is risky and moderate of coffee can actually lower the rate of Type 2 Diabetes! One more thing- apart from the intake of coffee, make sure that you do daily exercises and control your weight to keep the Type 2 Diabetes under control.
