Sinusitis: When to Consult a Doctor
![]() |
Sinusitis is a common health issue, which could be treated at home in its initial stage. But if no improvement could seen after two days of home treatment, it would be better to approach the doctor.
The main symptoms of sinusitis are and you have symptoms such as pain in the face or upper teeth, pain extending from the nose bridge to the lower eyelid and headache with no relief even after taking acetaminophen or aspirin. If the home treatment shows no relief and things look as if growing out of control, it would be better to consult a doctor. If fever crosses 101° and nasal discharge starts out clearing and later becoming thick and discoloured along with (yellow or green) repeated bleeding from nose, then it is time to fix an appointment with doctor.
When the cold symptoms last longer than 10 days or worsen after the first 7 days and you start suffering from mild or chronic pain in the face that lasts longer than a month, it means sinusitis is serious. Even after taking antibiotics, nothing comes better, just dial the doctor.
Watchful waiting is appropriate in the early stages of infection. It could be treated in the initial stages at home itself if you are in good health. Take a lot of drinking water with lots of fluids and breathe steam from a warm shower.
Sinusitis may be diagnosed by health professionals including family medicine doctor, paediatrician, internist, nurse practitioner and physician assistant.
As in the primary stage, the health professional may refer you to an ENT specialist who can take you for specialized examination of the nasal passages and upper throat. Diagnosis and surgical treatment of chronic or complicated cases of sinusitis may be done by an ENT specialist. Allergies can also cause sinus problems.
