Sinusitis: Home Treatment
![]() |
Sinusitis could be treated at home with medications. Applying moist heat to the face could bring relief to a big extend. This could improve drainage of mucus and reduce swelling in the sinuses. By applying moist heat pain is relieved and infection is cleared up.
Take care to prevent the formation of scar tissue, and avoid permanent damage to the tissues lining the nose and sinuses. Medications to treat sinusitis are helpful and effective especially when it is caused by a bacterial infection.
There are varying lengths of treatment with medications that last as short as three days or last as long as several weeks or more. Medications including a combination of antibiotics such as amoxicillin, which kill bacteria, decongestants and mucolytics are most often used to treat sinusitis. Decongestants like pseudoephedrine hydrochloride reduce the swelling of the mucous membranes in the nose, while, analgesics like aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen, relieves pain.
Inhaled antibiotics are effective treatment medications for chronic sinusitis. Studies show that since inhaled antibiotics make a direct contact with the mucous membranes, they could play an effective role where other treatments failed. There are chances of causing “double sickening” while being treated for acute or chronic sinusitis. May be in the beginning, you may feel better from antibiotics and home treatment, but when the symptoms become worse, you may need more effective treatment.
Short-term (acute) sinusitis lasts for a period less than 4 weeks. Most of those affected with acute sinusitis will improve on their own without any antibiotic treatment. In general cases, sinus infections are caused by viral infections, which do not respond to antibiotics. Consulting with a health professional will help in determining if treatment with antibiotics is needed for acute sinus infection. In the case of symptoms getting worsened during antibiotic treatment, contact your health professional for better results.
