Hypoglycaemia –The Symptoms
![]() |
Let us have a look at the symptoms of hypoglycaemia. The symptoms may vary depending on the dropping of low the blood sugar level. Mild hypoglycaemia does cause nausea, a jittery or nervous feeling, cold and clammy skin, sweating, hunger, and a rapid heartbeat. While at the same time, moderate hypoglycaemia can result in making you feel irritable, anxious, or confused. Blurred vision, feel unsteady, and have difficulty walking are also symptoms of moderate hypoglycaemia.
Severe hypoglycaemia can cause loss of consciousness, seizures, and coma.
The hypoglycaemia is diagnosed by physical examination, and tests to check blood sugar levels. Generally, if a blood test shows that the patient has low blood sugar and symptoms of hypoglycaemia that go away after you eat carbohydrate such as sugar; it simply means that you are affected by it. While making a medical history, the doctor will ask about symptoms that occur often, what brings them on, and how long they last. The patient will also be asked if any medicines are taken be him and if he had gained or lost weight in recent time.
A physical examination will also help the doctor in looking for the cause of the symptoms.
The laboratory tests to confirm low blood sugar will give the doctor an exact idea of the disease. Although, it would be best to do these tests when the symptoms start appearing, it is not possible always. As a part of the treatment for a sudden (acute) episode of hypoglycaemia, the patient will have to consume some form of sugar to restore the blood sugar to a normal level. Episodes of hypoglycaemia caused by a long-term (chronic) health condition are treated the same way. But prevention of future episodes does require treatment or cure of the long-term condition that is causing the hypoglycaemia.
