Gabapentin affects chemicals and nerves in the body which are involved in the cause of seizures and pains. But experts are clueless regarding the work it does on body. Gabapentin is mixed with other drugs in the treatment of some types of seizures and for postherpetic neuralgia other wise known as nerve pain caused by the herpes virus or shingles. Before opting for gabapentin, inform the doctor if you are suffering form any medical issues including kidney, liver, or heart disease. Also tell him the medicines that you in take, including over-the-counter preparations.

Gabapentin falls in the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is unknown whether it causes any harm to an unborn baby. Never take gabapentin without first talking to the doctor if you are pregnant or planning t become pregnant during treatment. Gabapentin can pass into breast milk, which says that intake of this medicine is a strict no-no if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Take gabapentin only as per the instructions of the doctor. If fails understand the directions, ask the pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to help you. Take each dose of gabapentin with a full glass of water. It could be taken with out without food.

To ensure that you take it in correct dose, measure the gabapentin oral solution with a dose-measuring cup or spoon, not a regular table spoon.

Always carry a medical identification tag along with you to let others know that you are taking this medicine in the case of an emergency.

Never stop taking gabapentin without consulting the doctor. Sudden stopping of gabapentin intake may cause side effects.

If you are taking gabapentin for seizures, do not stop it even if you feel better. Continue the intake to prevent seizures from recurring.

Store gabapentin tablets and capsules at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Store the medicine oral solution in the refrigerator.
