Let us see the situations where a patient suffering from influenza should call a doctor. If the patient is a baby younger than 3 months and has high fever, it is the time to call the nearby doctor. The influenza patient having trouble over breathing or is feeling very short of breath, then calling doctor is a nice option. Severe headache or stiff neck or having trouble in staying awake signals the need for calling the medical practitioner.
It is time to call-up the doctor if you are suffering from high fever that lasts for more than three days.
Any difficulties in breathing or developing wheezing are indictors of urgent need of consulting the doctor. If any new pain develops or pain localizes to one area, such as an ear, the throat, the chest, or the sinuses, the condition is severe that requires consultation of a doctor. Even if the symptoms persist in spite of home treatment or gets severe or frequent, you must meet the physician as soon as possible.
In most healthy people, the flu may go away in a span of 5 to 7 days, even though the fatigue may remain for a few more days. You may feel very sick, but with home treatment, things can be settled back to normal state within a couple of days. If it is flu season, home treatment will be sufficient. Observe carefully the symptoms of a bacterial infection, such as nasal drainage that changes from clear to coloured after 5 to 7 days.
Early treatment with antiviral medications will do a good job in bringing down the severity of influenza. But of course, it is hard to say that if; antiviral medications can prevent serious flu-related complications. Babies, older adults, and people with chronic health problems may have complications from the flu, which may require consultation of a doctor. It should be remembered that all antiviral medicines does not work against all strains of the flu. You can clear it with the doctor.
Consult a doctor if the symptoms are caused by something other than the flu.
