Comment Melamine Traced in US Infant Food
![]() |
After China, melamine consisting food has reached the US shores. As per the latest reports, traces of the industrial chemical melamine have been detected in samples of top-selling U.S. infant formula. But federal regulators insist that there is nothing to be panicked and the products are safe.
The Food and Drug Administration last month had come out with a statement that it was unable to identify any melamine exposure level as safe for infants. But a top official had seen commenting that it would be a “dangerous overreaction” for parents to stop feeding infant formula to babies.
According to Dr. Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, the melamine content are very low and is nothing to worry about.
Consumers Union but is on agitation mood. They came out on Wednesday alleging that the FDA advice is of small comfort to parents and caregivers. The groups want a complete recalling of the food. “According to Jean Halloran, the group’s director of Food Policy Initiatives, the FDA had earlier said that there was no safe level for these contaminants in infant formula. So this simply means that the formula is contaminated.
Halloran demanded the FDA to immediately make the results of its tests for melamine contamination in food public.
Melamine is the chemical found in Chinese infant formula that has been blamed for killing at least three babies and making at least 50,000 others ill.
Earlier, undisclosed tests, obtained by The Associated Press under the Freedom of Information Act, had shown that the FDA has detected melamine in a sample of one popular formula. It also has stated that the presence of cyanuric acid, a chemical relative of melamine, in the formula of a second manufacturer. Anyway with consumer groups stepping out for further clarifications, it is sure that health authorities are going to have a tough time in coming days.
