Fibre an important food ingredient

Fibre an important food ingredientFibre is an important part of your food and health. It is also known as roughage. Earlier it was not considered important or useful for our body and health. But now Researchers believe, with more and more research showing that a high-fiber diet may help prevent cancer, heart disease, and other serious ailments, roughage has started to get some respect. And suggests that we should be eating at least 25 grams of fiber per day, instead of the 12 grams most people are eating.

Helps in Weight loss: Well, it is said that fiber serves as the perfect way to reduce your appetite. This can be attributed to the fact that fibrous foods also known as cellulose and hemicelluloses, occupy a large space of your stomach, thus making you feel full and thereby enable you to avoid overeating. When you eat whole grain food, your hunger is satisfied faster. When you fill up on high fiber foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts, you are less likely to have room for high-fat, low-fiber foods with high calorie count. When you eat fewer calories by including fiber in your diet, you can lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

It Purifies blood: Fibre lowers your blood cholesterol level, by removing bile acids that digest fat. It also takes the responsibility of regulating your blood sugar. Also your risk factor of falling prey to kidney diseases is greatly reduced. So, incorporate fiber in your daily meals and derive its ultimate health benefits.

It Reduces the risk of Cancer: It is widely believed that fiber-rich diets would prevent colon cancer. Researchers believed that fiber strands formed a mesh network that grabbed on to cancer-causing substances and flushed them out of the intestines. Then one study also showed that women who ate 26 grams of fiber a day were not less likely to develop colon cancer compared to the study participants who only ate 8.5 grams.

Heart disease: Research published in the September 1999 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that fiber was a shield against heart disease. In fact, it was shown that women who ate at least 25 grams of fiber per day were 40% less likely to have a heart attack than the women who ate less than 9 grams of fiber a day. This was also true of the men in the studies. They could cut their risk of having a heart attack by 50% by eating a high fiber diet.

Sources: Fiber can be found in many foods: multigrain pancakes, muffins, whole grain bread, kidney beans, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Whole wheat bread is an excellent source of high fiber. Remember, the darker the color of the vegetables, the richer in nutrients they tend to be. Broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts - are a healthy choice for meals.

Telemedicine

TelemedicineTelemedicine involves the amalgamation of telecommunications, information, human-machine interface and medical-care technologies in medical field to improve the delivery and access. The institute of medicine defines telemedicine as “the use of electronic information and communication technologies to provide health care when distance separates the participants”. Telemedicine is composed of the word “tele” which means “far” in Greek, and the word “medicine”. Hence, it is defined as, the delivery of medicine from distance. Telemedicine is a system that connects primary care physicians, health care providers, and specialists to patients, who are geographically dispersed. Telemedicine has become a feasible option for providing routine and specialized medical services to those in distant/remote areas. It has gained significant attention during the recent years, though its existence and application goes back a few decades in time.

Telemedicine is distinct from “e-health” and “tele-health”. Telemedicine is concerned with the provision of clinical services. Tele-health may refer to the provision of clinical and non clinical services. Tele-health embraces areas and specialties such as nursing, pharmacology, occupational therapy etc. The term e-health refers to the provision of health information on the internet for either private or public use.

In telemedicine, patients’ case records are electronically transmitted from one place to another. Treatment is done using video links. There are five key elements of telemedicine: Distance, Data, Telecommunications, An expert to interpret the data and the ability to affect care as a result of data interpretation. Telemedicine is practiced through two methods- Real time (Synchronous) and Store-and-Forward (Asynchronous). In real time method; patients can communicate and interact with physicians. Video conferencing and audio visual signals help the providers and patients to communicate each other from remote locations. It is often used in cardiology, pediatrics, internal medicine, neurology, gynecology, rehabilitation and obstetrics. Store and forward implies acquiring medical data such as images, bio signals and transmitting it to a medical specialist for consultation, evaluation or any other use. Store and Forward Technology does not involve direct interaction and communication between patient and provider. This technology is more useful in Radiology, Pathology and Dermatology.

Telemedicine has several benefits. It reduces costs of travel, accommodation and processing and thus helps patients from remote areas. Chronic patients can be monitored at home regularly by remote consultants for certain cardio vascular, diabetic, renal, and respiratory cases. Moreover it helps the treatment of patients in inaccessible areas like mountains, ships at seas, areas affected by natural disasters etc.

Health and water

Health and waterWater is an essential element for life as it keeps you healthy. It has lot of medicinal value. Factually the average 150 lb. adult body contains 40 to 50 quarts of water. Almost 2/3rds of our body weight is “water weight”: The average healthful adult should be drinking at least one eight-ounce cup an hour, in order to replace the amount of water that is lost through exercise and other works. The other benefits of water are:

Allows for proper digestion

Water is indispensable for your body to digest and absorb vitamins and nutrients. Well-hydrated body cells function generally and efficiently. Fiber alone cannot aid proper digestive function by itself. In fact, without water as its partner, good fiber goes bad, causing constipation and extreme discomfort.

The findings of a six-year study of more than 20,000 healthy men and women aged 38-100, found that women who drank more than five glasses of water a day were 41% less likely to die from a heart attack during the study period than those who drank less than two glasses. Water Keeps Cardio Vascular system healthy. Researches have revealed that, drinking water regularly reduces the risk of heart diseases. So drink water and keep your heart healthy.

Helps you to loose weight

developing a good water drinking habit is good for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Yet another benefit of drinking water is that it can help you to lose weight. If you drink water every time you’re hungry instead of eating, it can often substitute for high calorie food which you might intake. So drink more and stay fit.

Keep Skin Healthy and Glowing
A well-hydrated skin prevents dry skin. Increased water intake moisturizes the skin from inside. It maintains the young looks. Drinking water not only moisturizes skin it acts as a toner and a cleanser too. It can also reduce wrinkles. Because when skin loses its moisture, it becomes dehydrated, and ultimately becomes wrinkled. So, drink water and maintain that charm of your skin.

Improve Your Energy level

We lose a certain amount of water each day through urination, respiration, and perspiration. If you’re dehydrated, your blood is thicker, and your body has to work much harder to circulate it to other parts of the body. As a result, the brain becomes inactive, and it’s hard to concentrate, and your energy level goes down. So to keep ourselves healthy and lively we need to replace it with drinking more and more water.

Remove Toxins & Waste Products from body
Water helps in expelling waste products produced in the body during the process of metabolism. It also detoxifies the liver and kidneys, and carries away waste from the body. Hence its essential to drink water everyday, as it helps to keep you alkaline.

Acidity- “a common disorder these days”

Twenty minutes after your meal, it hits you a burning sensation in your stomach, everything tastes sour, and you feel uncomfortable WHAT YOU EXPERINCE IS AN ATTACK OF HYPERACIDITY.

Acidity- “a common disorder these days”Acidity is nothing but excessive secretion of the normal acid which is present in the stomach. When the secretion is in normal amounts, it helps in digestion of food .But when the secretion is more it causes symptoms in the form of burning just below or behind the chest, pain, nausea, vomiting, eructations, and loss of appetite or excessive appetite depending on the severity of the problem. In other other words it can be said that acidity or acid peptic disease (ADP) represent a set of symptoms caused by an imbalance between acid secreting mechanism of the stomach and protective mechanism that keep the gut healthy.

MAJOR SYMPTOMS
Indigestion and heartburn are the most common stomach complaints. Heartburn usually occurs after a meal. If left untreated chronic acidity might lead to peptic ulcers.

It has been found that acidity usually tends to occur in one of the following conditions:
• After meals
• During the nighttime while lying on the bed
• While exerting pressure on the intra-abdominal area.

Major Causes
The stomach and intestine secrete hydrochloric acid and enzymes like pepsin that help in digestion but an excess of these can adversely affect the stomach.

ACIDITY MAY ALSO BE CAUSED DUE TO
• Alcohol consumption
• Consumption of highly spicy foods
• Non-vegetarian diets
• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID’s)

HOME REMIDIES
• Suck on clove or jaggery or chew a few basil (tulsi) leaves
• Refrigerated milk, bananas and vanilla ice-cream also give relief from acidity
• Sip fresh mint juice after meals
• Drink coconut water
• Eat a few almonds if heart burn persists

If you want to sort out the problem of acidity from root go in for a homeopathy treatment. The homeopathic treatment of hyperacidity is safe and convenient for it focuses on treating the condition by understanding the mind and body interrelationship. Remedies may also include natural medicines that are not habit-forming. Part of a homeopathy therapy is doing Yoga exercises. These Yoga exercises aim to strengthen digestive power. It also has a relaxing effect to the digestive organs resulting to a more controlled digestion .Self-help treatment can also be done simply by avoiding food and drinks that can lead to hyperacidity .It can also be tackled easily with changes in lifestyle, learning to relax, exercising, eating on time and choosing east to digest food.

TEEN HEALTH

Teen health is also known as” Adolescent health.”

As a teenager, you go through many changes. For one thing, your body is on its way to becoming its adult size. Have you noticed that you can’t fit into your old shoes or that your jeans are now 3 inches too short? Along with these changes, you are probably becoming more independent and making more of your own choices. Some of the biggest choices you face are about your health.

Why? Because healthy habits, including eating nutritiously and being physically active, can help you feel good, look good and do your best in school, work or sports. They might also prevent diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke and some cancers when you are older.

During puberty, adolescents experience a major growth spurt, and thus require increased nutrient needs. Boys experience the growth spurt at different times than girls. For males, puberty usually begins anywhere from the ages of 12 to 15 years, with peak growth usually occuring at 14. For females, puberty occurs much earlier, between the ages of 10 and 13, with peak growth occuring around the ages of 12 to 13. Thus, males need more nutrients than females during puberty, with the exception of iron. Girls need more iron because they are beginning to menstruate.

DIET TIPS FOR TEENS-
TEEN HEALTHHidden calories and empty calories are causing teens to become increasingly heavy and nutrient deficient at the same time. As kids enter their teenage years, their nutrient requirements suddenly increase to adult levels, and for minerals like phosphorus, magnesium and calcium they actually need more than adults do. A full 45 percent of total bone growth occurs during adolescence, and most teens don’t consume enough calcium to support it. Only 13 percent of girls and 36 percent of boys consume the recommended amount of calcium.

In order to avoid excess weight gain, and take in the nutrients their bodies need, teens should eat nutrient-dense foods, which provide a good amount of vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein in relation to their caloric count. So choosing snacks wisely is a great first step. Snacks like ice cream (high in saturated fat), candy (high in empty calories), chips (one 7-ounce bag of sour-cream-and-onion potato chips averages 1,051 calories) and soda are fine once in a while, but they should not be part of your daily intake. .Instead of a shake, ice cream or a Starbucks Creme Frappuccino (870 calories, 32 grams fat), choose a smoothie made with real fruit and skim or low-fat milk.

Breakfast should be a must. A recent study showed that young adults who did not eat breakfast every day were almost twice as likely to be overweight as those who did.

ACNE A MAJOR PROBLEM AMONG THE TEENS-
Acne is unavoidable during adolescence. Acne is the result of the acceleration in the production of hormones, androgens, that occurs in puberty. Acne is the clogging of the pores in the skin. A pimple forms when bacteria get into the clogged pore and fills the space with pus. Studies have failed to find any connection between acne and foods such as chocolate, cola, nuts, pizza, or french fries–foods which are oily and thought to be the cause of acne among many people. However, as these foods are not scientifically linked to cause acne, they may aggravate acne, so therefore elimination of their presence from the diet may be beneficial.

ASTHMA-
Many teenagers have asthma, or have had it when they were younger. Some people have problems due to their asthma most days, but most people have difficulty breathing only occasionally.

Most people with asthma can do just about everything everyone else can. Some really famous Australian sports people have asthma, including Olympic swimmers Sam Riley and Matthew Dunn, and record breaking long distance swimmer Susie Moroney.

Asthma is one of the most common reasons why students have to take time off school.

To keep asthma under control it is really important to be well educated about your asthma and how to manage it. Your doctor and your local asthma association can give you detailed information about how to manage your asthma.

WHAT IS ASTHMA??

* Asthma affects the small airways in the lungs (bronchioles).
* People with asthma have more sensitive airways than other people. Certain triggers make the airways narrower for a few hours or days, making it hard to breathe.
* In between attacks, the airways are a normal size.
* No one knows for sure why some people get asthma. It tends to run in families and is related to eczema and hay fever.

The teenagers today often neglect their eating habits, skip meals and eat junk food instead which leads to problems like obesity, lack of nutrients in the body, acne, asthma etc.Health should be the prime lookout of the teens.
