Bladder infections can be treated by oral antibiotics. Uncomplicated kidney infections can also be successfully medicated by oral antibiotics. In most cases, if the symptoms and urinalysis points to a urinary tract infection, then it would be better to start taking antibiotics without waiting for further results. 

The duration for the in taking of antibiotics depends on the location of the infection, along with age, gender, and other complicating medical conditions. Women with uncomplicated bladder infections can have antibiotics for 3 days. Earlier, there used to be long courses of treatment, but with new studies, shorter course of antibiotics is just as effective and causes fewer side effects.
 
Women with bladder infections having a recent UTI or having symptoms for more than 7 days should take a 7-day course of antibiotics.
If the patient is a man, then he may have to take antibiotics for 7 to 14 days. If the infection is at prostate, then a treatment for the period of 4 weeks or more may be required.
Men and women with kidney infections (pyelonephritis) may require to in take antibiotics for a period of 10 to 14 days.

For the patients above the age of  65, if affected by diabetes or an impaired immune system, may have to undergo longer courses of antibiotics.

The medical practitioners advise the women affected with repeat infections to take antibiotics for 2 to 6 weeks. It would be always advisable to have a talk with the doctor before going for medication.

The medicines that are prescribed are often less expensive. Just stick on the medicines prescribed by the doctor. But don’t stop the intake of the medicine as soon as you feel better, as there are chances of the infection to come back.
But make it sure to inform the doctor about your symptoms before opting for medications. If went for treatment at the right time, no doubt, bladder infections could be tackled effectively.
